The day's promised thunderstorms arrived a couple of hours ago. It's raining hard, and we didn't need it. The dog towels that I laundered on Sunday have already been washed again, and the kitchen and dining room floor look like absolute crap.

Because of the lack of warmth and sun, I finally broke down and set up the grow light for the seed tray. I don't know if it helped or not, but several pepper and tomato seeds have sprouted. If all the current hatchlings survive, I'll have more than enough to plant next month.

Heard that Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith on Dr Who, passed away today. I liked her. I *think* she was my first companion. I started watching Dr Who during the Tom Baker years, and she traveled with him for a time.

Now to work, with occasional checks of the media to see if the Blackhawks live to skate another day.

Dave Bolland was back--he'd been out for a while with a concussion. He made a huge difference. Plus the Hawks were playing for their lives.

They're in a deep hole. One game at a time.

Just saw the news about Elizabeth Sladen. She was my first companion, too. :(

You should be proud of your 'Hawks tonight. They kicked butt but good.

I'm glad they weren't swept, but I'm not sure they have it in them to be the Flyer of 2011. Would love to be wrong, but realistically I am expecting a shorter hockey season this year.

Nod. Yeah, I know what you mean. I was worried about the Sharks after they went down in a 4-0 loss during Game Two against LA. Game Three looked like it was going to be the exact same thing: by the second period, they were down 4-0 yet again. Then the coach made a goaltending change, and suddenly they woke up and started playing like an NHL team. They scored 5 goals in the latter half of the second period, and then won it in OT. It was an amazing comeback.

That is the truly frustrating thing about the Sharks. They have the ability to play like an elite team, but their work ethic isn't always there. When they play hungry, they're scary good. But when they play like Silicon Valley slackers, they get their asses kicked.

I think I've mentioned before that this Hawks team reminds me of the 2007 team. I am by no means an expert fan, but I saw a streaky team that could go from brilliance to utter incompetence and back again over the course of a period. They had pretty much the same team at that time, so it was a question of waiting for the pieces to mesh. Now, I don't think they have all the pieces. They lost half the team, and the replacements don't quite fit.

I would give a lot to get Dustin Byfuglien and his obnoxious physicality back, frex, but the Thrashers locked him up for the next few years.
