...and another chance to show off new DangerMouse avatars.

I was writing merrily...ok, make that haltingly...along last night when I hit a point at which Niall, my lit major colonel, quoted something. I didn't plan it that way, but every so often I reach a place where/when I realize that Niall would Say Something. Problem is, except for the fact that the subject matter would be guilt, or war, or a combo platter, I didn't know what he'd say.

So out came my Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. I spent an hour's writing time last night paging, paging, paging, and didn't come up with anything suitable. Decided to Google war quotes tonight and by golly, found something. It's something I should probably have known right off the bat, but a lit'ry quotation machine I ain't. Reference materials are my friends.

And on that note...once more unto the breach, dear friends...

Wow, that is an interesting way to procrastinate if I ever heard one ;) I have been guilty of trolling the web for a vaguely remembered quotation for hours at times--and isn't it both intriguing and slightly annoying that a character that you have created just decides on his/her own to go off in a direction or say something that can alter your original narrative? Not saying it is a bad thing, mind you :)

Thing is, the tone of the quote dictates the rest of the scene, so I really wanted to settle on something definite. Ideally, I also wanted the sort of quote that would indicate to Jani exactly what Niall was trying to ask her before he stated it explicitly. It wouldn't be the sort of thing he'd want to come right out and say because he doesn't feel comfortable asking her the question.

As usual, Shakespeare had something appropriate. It was the 'Once more unto the breach" line from the initial post.

And we get to see a side of Niall we haven't seen since RULES, which really did come out of nowhere. I knew he was uncomfortable about the upcoming stuff. I didn't really how close to the edge he has been operating, mentally/emotionally, for years.
