Well, look at it this way. There are a number of us exceedingly cool people who won't be there. You're not alone.

I really need to manage my vacation time better. I used this year's allotment for writing, which means I really didn't have any significant time off. No cons. No travel at all. Next year, so help me I am taking a real break. NYC for a week, probably in March.

It would have been a nice break.

True. I think you're wise to plan for a non-writing break next year.

Trying not to think about NYC too much, because it's almost half a year out and I don't want to wish the months away. But I think about puttering around and window shopping and museums and maybe a show or two...

There's a boutique hotel called The Library that sounds neat:

Located 1 block from the New York Public Library, each of the Library Hotel's 10 guest-room floors is dedicated to 1 of the 10 major categories of the Dewey Decimal System.

You could come to This ConFusion Has Not Yet Been Rated in Detroit this January instead. We're just as good as the WFC! And more SF-y!

I'm sorry you won't be at WFC. It would be nice to have seen you.

And if you feel a need for a con, Windy is drivable and in 2½ weeks.

I'll be staying at the Library Hotel next month when I'm in New York for the SFWA Reception. If you like, I can give you a report on whether it is worth staying at beyond the cool concept.

I'll definitely second that notion.

But, I'll also miss not seeing you at WFC.

WFC was supposed to be my last gasp prior to a couple of heavy work months. By mid-November, I will be up to my armpits in sekrit project. So much for the rest of 2010.

I'd be interested in The Library's wi-fi costs. If past experience in NYC hotels repeats, they're prohibitive.

Looks like fun. What's the weather like?

According to the Library's website, "Complimentary wireless high speed Internet access (value $15 per person)."

I also know of another hotel I've stayed at the last two years which is closer to Times Square, a little cheaper than the Library, and also includes free wifi, called The Hotel at Times Square (it is about two blocks away from TS). Both hotels also include breakfast.

And at the same intersection as the Library Hotel, there is this coffee shop (http://omgshots.com/410-despresso-coffee-shop-in-new-york.html), which includes a vertiginous-inducing book theme.

Well, it's January in Detroit, so not much different from January in Chicago. It's almost certainly going to be pretty damn cold, and there's a chance of snow piled up to the rooftops.

But, I keep going because it's just that much fun.
