I harvested my first greens on May 28th. I think the batch I cut today will be it until the fall planting.

There's a little arugula, but mostly much larger versions of mesclun mix lettuces, including a very curly variety. These are not sweet baby lettuces. At worst, they're somewhat bitter. At best, they have a raw veggie flavor along the lines of broccoli. They actually taste like something, instead of being just a blank slate to hold some dressing.

I filled two of those Freshen Up bags with today's harvest. Should last at least a week, maybe a week and a half. I have found that these greens keep better than the mixes that come in the plastic boxes. I've probably only saved $40-$50 by growing my own, but I enjoyed it and the stuff tasted good, so.

In other news, I have about 14 tomato plants total, including the unintended 6-7 that have popped up in the middle of the greens. In addition, several dill and parsley plants have also cropped up amid the greens. I think what happened was that some seeds survived in the composter, and managed to live through the winter after I spread the mess in the beds. It's nice to have the dill. It will be great to have the tomatoes. I don't know for sure which varieties the surprises are. They could be the same types I grew last year, or they could even have sprouted from seeds that came from storeboughten. I'll know when I know. One of the plants that I have in a pot on the deck is already showing a teeny tomato, and all the plants have buds. I see a great deal of marinara in my future. Given that my basil is doing really well--fingers crossed--I also foresee some really good salads.
