My day

Wine...

It began well enough. I worked from home so I could keep an eye on King and make sure he didn't get into his bandage. Until late afternoon, all was golden. Then he started tugging at the tape. I tried wetting it with Listerine...and King licked it off my fingers. I called local pet supply big boxes about inflatable barrier collars. Found one nearby that had an XL in stock, and went to get it. By the time I got home, King had torn the top of the bandage and started on the stitches.

I got the collar on him. He hates it, and he's upset. He was able to eat dinner and drink water. Tried lying down, but was too agitated. He is now up on the couch next to me. He fell asleep on my left arm, so I'm typing one-handed. I take him in first thing tomorrow to get rebandaged. The clinic offers day boarding, and I think I will opt for that so I don't have to worry about Himself the Elf during the day.

The guilty party:

Oh my goodness, I feel an uncontrollable urge to feed King cookies. Look at that *face*.

I have used Tabasco over a bandage in a pinch when I didn't have Bitter Apple around. Never tried Listerine but I may give it a whirl.

When King was going through his mulch-eating gastritis phase, I was advised to try sprinkling ground cayenne pepper on said mulch to dissuade him. Before doing that, I sprinkled some on my fingers and let him sniff to gauge his reaction. He licked the stuff off my hand.

He licked Listerine off my fingers, too.

Bitter Apple doesn't faze King. I bought something called "Fooey" that is supposed to be better, but I haven't used it yet because I don't want to risk putting it on the stitches.

I was struck by the pathetic expression. However, sympathy is a little thin on the ground at the moment. I was sick when I saw those exposed stitches.

I laughed out loud when I saw this photo. How pathetic does he look? “Please help me. Have pity. I do not like this large inflatable collar. I will not lick my bandages. Can I go out? Where's my toy? Can I sleep with you?” I don't even know him and I'm ready to spring him.

Yeah, that's quite a sell job he's doing there. I support you in your lack of sympathy. I went round and round with my boy-cat recently when he had to have minor surgery on a paw he kept compulsively licking until it bled. (Caused an encapsulated lesion.) He still has a tendency to do that but we yell at him and he slinks away, and after two seconds forgets he was licking it. I guess the stupidity is a double-edged sword.

It's hard to imagine anything a creature who loves to roll in rotten animal carcasses *wouldn't* like to lick.

Poor King, he's wearing the collar of shame. Sad for him. Hope his stitches heal quickly so you aren't driven absolutely bonkers (we went through this with Dog of Chaos). Hugs.

It looks like he's wearing a doggie life preserver...and has just been told he can't go back into the water. LOL Poor doggie!

It is a classic expression. He does pathetic well.

He did manage to sleep at least part of the night. So did I, but I'm still whipped.

He's in doggy daycare today. He may not have to wear the Collar of Doom, but he will be watched and confined.

The cayenne surprised me. I think King has a concrete mouth.

We don't hit 10 days until next Friday, which seems like ages. His original app't for a bandage change was tomorrow afternoon-they would have decided then whether to rebandage or leave the wound bare. Given that he's on preemptive antibiotics, a bare wound probably wouldn't be bad, even if he licked it. But I don't know how much damage he did, if any.
