When I ordered HDTV from my cable company, they mistakenly installed a DVR box instead, which I discovered when I received a letter noting that they were going to start charging me the higher fee for that box. I phoned them, they found they made a mistake, and offered to let me keep it at the HDTV price. OK, I said, but I don't record shows.

I do now.

So easy to set up. I recorded a Dr Who ep on Sunday, and tonight I'll be recording the NOVA Music and the Brain episode while I watch Rachel Maddow.

Nice.

We haven't watched a commercial since we got our DVR. The remote has a "skip" button. Love it.

I like some commercials. Some of my favorite music are the instrumental snippets on car commercials.

But recording one show while watching another? Nice.

It really does change the way you watch tv. I love watching whole seasons in a week, or being able to go out and do something and not miss anything.

We can't watch one show live and record another with just one box and a satellite dish, but we can watch a recording while another is recording. Works for me.

I got a TiVo about 9 or 10 years ago, and demonstrated it for my parents; they immediately went out and got one, and claim that it contributes greatly to domestic harmony.
