French press

In other news, I bought a French press coffee maker. The only time I had French press was in Glasgow during my Intersection trip in 1995. I don't remember if I thought is was anything special, but I'm in the mood to try something different, so here goes. I'll try it in the morning.

I used to keep one in my office. As soon as I added coffee to the hot water, people would drop by. It is a coffee-lover's dream. And unlike Starbucks or [insert name of favorite prepared coffee here], you can make it as strong as you like.

I'm going to have to be careful when grinding the beans for it because I have a tendency to render them to powder, which can then clog the filter. But if I like it enough, I'll be able to get rid of the autodrip coffeemaker, which will free up a bit of counter space.

There are two things I don't like about a press: cleanup takes a little more time and the pot doesn't stay warm once you've made the coffee.

We find that we us the French Press when we want a nice coffee together, but the coffeemaker remains the regular workhorse for us.

I am hoping to try it tomorrow. Today was spent snow shoveling, grocery shopping, and cookie baking. Now we're wine drinking and hockey watching.

OK, tried it this morning. Screwed up, either by grinding the coffee too coarsely or not letting it steep long enough, or both. I am inclined to believe the former because I was able to push down the plunger with one finger. Next time I try it, I will grind the coffee a little finer.
