When our husky was small we dug a den into a dirt berm in our front yard, and covered it with flagstone and then a layer of soil over that. We thought that he'd use it when the weather was bad.
He *hated* rain and especially thunder. So, yes, he would go in there when it was raining. But at the first hint of snow, he'd gallop around like he'd struck it rich. He *hated* it when we shoveled. He *loved* snow. If you threw a snowball at him, he'd catch it and howl, begging for more. When it was deep enough, he'd roll, and work the flakes deep into his coat. They he'd shake them loose and roll again.
Twenty below, and where's the dog? In the house? No, he didn't want to come in. In his den? No. That's HUSKY weather! He's out on his hill enjoying the cold.
Now the other part of this story took me as much by surprise as him out in way too cold weather. 80F, and where's the dog? In his den, where it's cooler.
Our husky was afraid of heights. I guess it makes sense, if you're a dog in an icy world, you wouldn't want to fall into a crevasse. He was also very odd about water. On a hot day, he'd wade up to his belly. But he never liked getting fully wet. On a cold day, he knew better than to let his coat get wet. And he wouldn't go out on weak ice.
