I may need to buy a new one in the next few days. Models to avoid? Models that last?

Don't rec anything like a Sharp Aquos (sp?). But I'm inclined to stick with major names--Sony, Toshiba, etc.

I just purchased a 32" Samsung LCD HDTV. The picture is great and the price was reasonable. Go HD, look for 1080P on anything larger than 32", 720P on anything 32" or smaller. Look for a high contrast ratio. Keep an eye on the number and types of inputs. With modern solid state electronics, most TV's just don't break until they get rather long in the tooth and due for replacement anyway. The big thing to be careful about is stuck and dead pixels, which is more an aspect of quality control than anything else. Otherwise, look for a good picture and keep in mind, it won't look guite as good when you get home and plug it into your lower quality inputs.

Thanks! I saw some good write-ups on Sony Brevias as well. I'm inclined toward the 32" because of price + relatively small living room.

Luckily, while I fear I will need one soon, the immediate need is no more. Comcast performed some repair work early this morning, and i was awakened by the sound of my antique console TV in loud fuzz mode. Had to unplug it to turn it off. Couldn't get the cable back. Couldn't even change the TV channel to 03 when I bypassed the cable box and worked directly from the TV control panel.

Unplugged it when I went back to work. Several hours of quiet was enough to clear whatever e-blockage wouldn't allow for channel changes. Got the cable reattached. After some button punching on two different remotes, we're back on now. Now I know what to do in case it happens again--it's a little different than when the TV used to fail on DirecTV.

I just want it to last until the January sales...

We are very happy with our new Sony Brevia 26." We found the best price at Target, of all places. Sonys are expensive as a brand, so be sure to shop around.

Oh I will.

I'm glad I was able to readjust the old set, because this was a purchase I didn't want to make in haste.
