Actually, I think it was the same photographer who shot the CI photo, but I don't think she remembered me.

Picture has been committed. I wound up choosing 5 shots for the new publicity library. I know which one I'll use for the book, but the others are nice-to-haves for those times when I don't just want to send out the book shot.

I look like I look. My problem is, I want to look like I did 15 years ago. Still haven't come to grips with the "late 40s unto 50" thing. Not asking for buck-ups or sympathy--just telling it like it is.

Too cold to try outdoor shots, but the photog had some neat interior things that made it look as though I stood in front of a brick wall or leaned on a stone bannister. I wore my glasses, because they look authorly, they matched what I wore, and I actually looked better with them.

The best photo that has ever been taken of my Mom happened when she was at a party in the late 60s/early 70s. She'd gone to the restroom--someone called her name, and she stuck her head out the door and looked down the hall and click they snapped the picture. Best shot ever--my Dad kept it tucked in the sun visor of his car or in his wallet until he died.

I think the moral of the story is that candid shots are best, and if I'd had a good up-to-date one, I'd have used it.

In other news, my right eye is acting up. I wonder if I scratched the cornea somehow--it tears a little, and itches/burns. Not bloodshot. And I see a little light-flashy-thingy in the area every time I blink. That side of my face feels odd, so it could be sinus. But my eye definitely burns.

I guess my teeth felt left out, because the one end of my permanent retainer managed to work loose. Need to call the dentist and get it rewelded. I'll give the eye a day or two--it's not a problem, it's just there.

Did you hit your head, or jostle it hard recently? I don't mean to be alarmist, but detached retinas can sneak up on you.

The eye can probably wait a day or two, but you should get it checked out.

Congrats on surviving the ordeal. I need a new author photo but have been procrastinating. I still look reasonably like my old one, so it's not urgent, but I'd like to get something more candid rather than a staged head shot.

We don't get to see the pics?

Yanno, it doesn't take much to zing my Inner Hypochondriac. Because I had been Googling on "corneal abrasions" and "detached retinas".

Got in to see my eye doctor. The verdict--low-grade infection. He gave me drops.

Funny thing is, he has had a detached retina, which required surgical repair, so he knew the symptoms first-hand. We ran down them together--he could tell I'd been Googling. We talked about other stuff, and as I was leaving, he said, "Google less. Enjoy life more."

I deserved it.

I lived. I think they're pretty good, overall--not completely candid, but not too staged. The photog did try to get me to smile and talk. To relax a bit. I was kinda concerned about my eye, so maybe that messed up my mood. She actually liked the expression on my face as I was settling the bill--which I don't think was bad for 5 shots w/ retouch--and talking about my cover. If she'd had a camera handy, I think she'd have snapped a pic right then and there.

Glad you went to see the doc. Even an infection needs looking at -- so it doesn't become a big deal.

Yeah. I've had one full-blown eye infection in my life, and I really don't want another.
