Still here

We're into the 'ber months. Oy.

I spent a good chunk of yesterday pulling up blighty tomato plants and picking greenies for indoor ripening. No matter how much fungicide I sprayed and how diligently I trimmed diseased vegetation, the spotting and yellowing still spread. The greenies are now bagged and stashed in the spare room. I left a few of the smaller ones on the plants to ripen further, but I'm not going to worry about them. If they die, they die.

I don't know what I'm going to do next year. I dread the thought of replacing the dirt, but that may be what I will have to do. That, or plant blight-resistant varieties. That means no more Pink Brandywine, Roma, or Rutgers.

In addition to picking and bagging, I blanched, skinned and seeded several pounds of tomatoes for freezing. Picked 5 cups worth of basil leaves and made pesto. Baked banana bread.

Every so often, I would see a chipmunk dash across the lawn to the bird feeder. Gaby would see it, too, and chase it up one of the dwarf crabapples, where it would perch and wait for Herself to go inside.

Well, Alvin's luck ran out today. I came home from work, and was outside with the pups when I saw Gaby carrying something in her mouth. It was bigger than a mouse, but lacked a tail. I got her inside and went to check and yup, it was the chipmunk. I scooped it up and dumped it on the other side of the fence. Poor thing. Nothing like coming home and finding I need to dispose of another body.

I contributed some money to Diaspora when it was in the funds-gathering stage, and will be setting up a page/account/whatever once it gets going. If it works out, I may cancel my Facebook account and move. We'll see how it goes.
