ksmith: (gimme a break)
It's been a week of a thousand cuts so far...along with a few hacks and baseball bat across the kneecaps. Sunday, my right rotator cuff, which had been bugging me off and on for a few weeks, succumbed to a triple assault of hauling grocery bags, hoisting the vacuum cleaner, and pulling/tugging fitted sheets into place, and blew out to a minor degree. The problem is, a minor cuff issue is still a major inconvenience. I can't pull. I can't lift. I can't reach out. Add to that the fact that like lower back muscles, arm muscles get involved in movements you don't think they get involved in, like turning over in bed even if you're really, really careful, and you have the makings of a great day, followed by an even better night's sleep. I've been popping ibuprofen since, and the arm feels better. But I know from experience--blew out the left cuff about 10-12 years ago--that it's going to take a few weeks to heal completely. It doesn't help that it's my dominant arm/hand. I've been reaching with my left a lot, and it's damned awkward.

Monday was Monday cubed, involving stuff I can't talk about, a lousy night's sleep, and a really sore arm. Tuesday was a little better--long talk with friend about Monday, and cookies that I baked on Monday in response to the suckiness of the day.

This morning, awoke to rain. But, it was light and didn't last long, so. Went out to garage, started Kuro and pulled out into the driveway , and heard a "ka-thunk ka-thunk" coming from the rear. I thought something had gotten trapped in the wheel well, so I got out to check...and saw that my left rear tire was flat as a pancake.

I stared for a time in dumb amazement. Thought for a split second about changing it myself, then remembered Shoulder. Thought about phoning AAA, but instead of calling them, I looked up local tire stores. There was a repair place about a mile from my house. I called. Guy said I should come right over. So I took a chance and decided to risk the rim and drive there without trying to reinflate the tire or anything. Arrived there, and assumed that my luck being what it was, I was looking at two new tires, at least.

I caught a break. The flat was caused by a 1 1/2 inch piece of metal, like a smashed nail with the top sheared off, that had popped through the tire and lodged inside. The service guy patched the tire, and I was on my way to work in about 20 minutes. Didn't screw up the rim--I was probably lucky there. I can see the tracks that it left on the driveway surface.

While I was waiting for Kuro, I walked around the waiting area, and almost stepped on a caterpillar that was crawling on the entry rug. There was a little kid running around the store, and I figured that between him and the random folks who weren't watching where they walked, caterpillar had the life expectancy of a glass hammer. So I picked it up with my metal tireslayer, carried it outside, and deposited it in a nearby shrub. Here's hoping it doesn't prove to be some mutant Mothra thing that will grow up to wipe out tomato plants in a three-county area.

A little boredom for the balance of the week wouldn't go amiss.
