ksmith: (gimme a break)
A mixed morning. Gaby was a little restless during the night, and when I awoke, I found that she had visited her usual corner of the living room. I had four, count 'em, *4* piddle pads laid out for just that purpose, two covered with newspaper in case she needed to pee as well. She still used the hardwood floor. I don't know why she avoids those pads, but she only hits them 1 out of 5 times.

At least the stuff is in better shape. Gaby is in good spirits, too--bouncy, playful, and eager to eat. Will continue with the rice and the probiotics. No lab results yet, so will continue feeding her the duck.

Fingers crossed on the mouse front, as this is the second day that I have found the trap empty. Up until yesterday, I had been trapping one or two baby deer mice a day--either one of the adults I trapped on 27 Nov gave forth with an above average litter, or both adults were pregnant females. We're talking at least 10-12 baby mice. No new larger mice of either the house or deer variety have been seen. I hope that means that they did find their way in through the dryer vent, because that vent is now blocked. I will still leave the trap down there, though. I'm just hoping I don't need it anymore.

The trap in the kitchen cupboard continues empty.

Spent some time at the feed store today talking Dogs. One lady came in with her adult male Great Dane, a handsome black fellow with lovely manners. The other lady is the owner of a four-month old female GD. Within 5 minutes, we were talking poop size and quality. Do Cat people do this?

Feed Store Lady laughed. She said she'd like to put out a table and chairs for people to sit and talk, but there's no room. Apparently the conversations break out quite often there.

The lady with the adult GD has had dogs that lived to be 11 or 12, which amazed me. I did not realize that giant dogs could live that long. She did lose one at age 6 to bone cancer, but for the most part she has had dogs live into double digits.

I dragged myself away eventually. Grocery shopped. Home now, but haircut and massage in a half-hour. Both are needed. I visited the local bakery and treated myself to an entire apple turnover, which is rare for me--I usually cut off a snip here and there over the course of a day or two. Later, I will bake some Brie and have it with sliced apple and some of my cranberry relish. A warm roll. Glass of wine. Some days, you just need something like that.

Hawks beat the Pens in OT, 2-1. When they gave up the tying goal with a minute and a half left, I thought they might wrest defeat from the jaws of victory and blow it, but they didn't. They played just good enough to win, except for Niemi, who was fantastic between the pipes.
