Damn.

Took a day off yesterday, though, and it was beautiful--blue sky sunny and 60s. 1400 words in the morning, then grocery shopping. Found two bell pepper plants with buds, so I brought them home and planted them in the raised bed, moving sage to the deck planter to make room. I officially now have more sage than I know what to do with. I will use some tomorrow in the roast chicken, and nurse the plants along until the fall when I will strip and dry the leaves.

I also moved the sweet basil from the hanging basket to the deck planter to see if a change in scenery helps it along. I fear it is not long for this world. Over the last few weeks, it has gone from healthy, vigorous rich green to sickly yellow-green with brown spots, which is a sign of overwatering. The basket it was in drains almost too well, so I am guessing the issue is a combination of coolth and limited sunshine. And, well, rain. I am hoping that the basil plants I grew from seeds adapt better.

The deck planter now contains dill, Lettuce-Leaf and Sweet Italian basil, parsley and/or cilantro--it's hard to tell when the squirrels go in and move everything around--and one lone chive. The parsley and cilantro in the raised bed are so tall that they are flowering. The kohlrabi have exploded--one bulb is over an inch in diameter. According to the literature, bulbs should be picked when they're between 2-3" in diameter, so that one is getting close. After all the kohlrabi are gone, the pepper and tomatoes will have more room. The squash is putting forth many buds, and has one ?fruit? that is 3-4" long and turning yellow. The zucchini is flowering, but is smaller than the squash and frankly looks rather sickly. Maybe it prefers warmer weather?

A few of the strawberries are budding.

Thinking about next year. Salad greens, definitely. Red lettuce and arugula. Maybe spinach. Tomatoes. Basils. Parsley and cilantro. Peppers. Not sure about zucchini, even though much can be done with it.

After planting and transplanting, mowed the backyard. Then came dinner--enough broiled asparagus and tomato for an army, but damn I love it--followed by 600 more words. Wanted more. Maybe today.
