'course, "Smith" is the most common surname in the US. Not sure how far back my twig of it goes. A great aunt traced it back to Devonshire, but given the stuff that used to go on in that part of England--smuggling and such--I'm convinced some ancestor of mine had to leave the area under an assumed name.
