Went with a friend to see Morrissey last night at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan. The opening act, Kristeen Young--I thought she was ok, although my friend thought she was trying to channel Bjork and made a hash of it.
After a half hour or so of that came an interesting film montage. A French pop singer. Brigitte Bardot singing something about bubble gum. James Dean and another actor doing clothing/photography tests for East of Eden--friend said that the other actor is on several of the Smiths' EP covers. Finally, a clip from an old Robert Stack/Elliot Ness episode in which the bad guys are out to kill a guy named Morrissey.
Then came the man himself, swinging right into "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," followed by "Tomorrow," followed by a really good mix of Smiths/solo tunes. His band was really good, beautiful boys in matching white shirts/khakis. Much good music, played against a backdrop of images of a young Richard Burton.
I was a bit tired today.
