ksmith: (gimme a break)
The best word I can think of to describe the Mood du Jour is 'unsettled'. I've an upset stomach. Feel personally and professionally *and* physically restless. I've heard bad news concerning people I don't know well--the sort of thing that bothers you even though it doesn't affect the pattern of your life in any way.

Me being me, I want to be somewhere else, and have been pondering what sort of place that might be. )

That's all for now. Consider this my contribution to Meme Culture. Think about a place you'd like to be right now, either real or imagined. Post about it here, or in your own journal, or just ponder it for a while.

About 12 or so years ago, I went to Wilmington, North Carolina, for a class. I grew up in Florida, and I really don't miss Heat and Bugs and such, but I liked Wilmington. At the time I was there, it had a college town feel--UNC has a campus there--along with an artsy feel to the downtown. Think Austin. Think Madison. Dennis Hopper had bought a building and was at the time considering opening some sort of acting school/theatre group, and all the local restaurants were staffed by college students. Many of the homes were refurbed Victorians, serving as B&Bs. I was there in mid-late May, and the flowers had exploded in typical southern fashion. I remember the hydrangeas, great, weighty blooms lolling to the ground. The heat, already hi 80s/lo 90s.

Wilmington is on the Cape Fear River. One day after class, co-worker and I took a walk along the river. We passed some type of bar/bbq place with outdoor jazz and blues. A little farther along, we found a restaurant right on the river, called Elijah's. We stopped there for lunch, and wound up going back several times. We sat on the patio overlooking the river, and sipped wine, and ate good food, and watched the pelicans dive.

The photo on my website of the little stone rabbit? I bought it at a garden/craft shop there.

I liked Wilmington. I'd go back anytime, especially since Elijah's is still there.
