It's a Bradbury-class wind honking outside this morning. It started yesterday afternoon with gusts strong enough to blow over bags of leaves and send the contents scattering. As night progressed, winds remained steady at 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Mickey came into my room a few times to complain in his quiet doggy way about the UPS alarm. The first time it went off, around 330am, the power only flickered. The second time, at 530am, the power went off completely. I got up and powered down the iMac, thanked Mickey for his assistance, and went back to bed. Lay awake for a time and wondered how I would open the garage door--yes I know there's a way to open a garage door without the mechanicals, I've just never done it. Luckily, I don't yet need to find out. The power came back an hour later.

Winds are supposed to lessen by this evening. I braved the roar and checked out how many more dilapidated shingles have been stripped from the garage roof. I know I should get it reshingled--no sign of leaks yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. On the good news side, the onslaught eliminated about 90% of the leaves from the front and side yard, the tarp did not blow off the stack of mulch bags on the west side of the house, and the birdbath did not blow over.

Took a break from Jani 5 yesterday to start plotting out the dark fantasy/horror/whatever it is that fell into my head over the past week. I've noodled with some of the ideas and characters for a couple of years now, but some of the plot stuff needed, well, actual stuffing.

A story starts out so simply.

And then things start to pup.
