In the air tonight
Apr. 22nd, 2005 09:35 pmMy iBook must have felt left out after reading in other groups about the wonkiness of various of his brethren. He was fine when I shut him down last night. This morning, however, his dial-up modem refused to dial up--the thing would get stuck in a perpetual "Dialing--dialing" do-loop until I was compelled to Force Quit/Shut Down. It took three tries before I finally got on line.
More of the same this evening. Got stuck in Dialing, necessitating Force Quit. Reboot. Thought I would do a Repair Permissions via Macaroni, but when I tried to open up System Preferences via the Menu Bar (I know that's not the name, but I'm a refugee from the PC side of the Force), all I got was a bouncy-bouncy lightswitch. Another Force Quit. Tried the modem again. Phfft. System Preferences again. Phfft again. I think I rebooted a total of 4 times.
Finally, I went into System Preferences via Finder and got into Macaroni. Did the daily fix, which hadn't run in a few days. Then I repaired permissions. After that, I went into Library Cache and dumped some temp files. Then I opened up Internet Connection and tried dialing out that way. Success.
So here I am, hoping that the Tiger upgrade fixes whatever screwiness had overtaken this system. It never seemed as solid as the iMac desktop. I've also never had so many issues as when I started doing light housekeeping on a regular basis. 12 months with only the occasional glitch. Now they seem more frequent.
