Why do dogs insist on barking in the middle of the night
Its not as though the cats are spinning yarns in the moonlight
Its not as though the late night possum races have commenced
And the coyotes took the best seats up along the fence

Its not as though there's anyone out there to be seen
Vagabonds or ne'er-do-wells or any in-betweens
Its not as though raccoons are playing tag among the trees
or peeling shingles from the roof and stealing them, so please

Tell me if you can, as I burn the outdoor light
Why do dogs insist on barking in the middle of the night

i speculate from experience ...

Probably the same thing that makes cats dredge out ping-pong balls and bat them around in your bathroom at 2:00 a.m. Hypothetically.

Why do cocks crow in the middle of the night? I don't know if there is still one in the chicken coop a couple houses away, but there was one back in the summer, at at 1 and 2 AM it made that fact known to anyone in the neighborhood awake who could hear. Gradually it tailed off, either it quieted down, or it is no longer there.

(I discovered the chicken flock the day I heard weird bird noises in the backyard, went out to check, and saw the entire flock of escaped chickened pecking around under one of my apple trees.... I much later noticed the coop two houses down in the back.)
