ksmith: (my bike)

Let's see if we can blame [livejournal.com profile] pbray for this. I've been enjoying her accounts of her bike rides and training for her upcoming trip. I can't run--tried, and my knees won't take it. Working out indoors...eh. I need to do something in the exercise vein, so...after pondering for a week or so, I stopped by our highly-regarded local bike shop and bought a bike. It's the one in the icon, a Trek 7100 Hybrid in shades of dull green/gold--looks more like dark/light platinum to me, but what do I know?

Oh, the toy possibilities. I had the little odometer attached, as well as the water bottle thingie, the tool kit bag, and the pump, not to mention the bike rack for the Forester. A helmet. Had a gel-filled seat put on. I better ride the thing is all I can say.

I did try the thing out, and I will say that it felt strange to ride a bike for the first time in *mumblemumble* years. Still need to work out the gear settings--the shop owner did instruct me but I never get things like this the first time through anyway. Got some hands-on instruction in changing tires--hope I remember it if/when the time comes.

Bikebikebike!

And for the winter, we may at long last give xcountry skiing a try.

Sierra Trading Post also carries close-out jerseys, bike shorts, helmets, etc.

I also receive a multitude of catalogs--Title 9, Athleta, Activa, Terry, not to mention STP.

I have a pair of shorts that will do for now, and I'll stick to t-shirts for the time being. I want to make sure that I can stick with this, knee-wise, before I go nuts and join a club or something.

Went out for my first ride--not quite 4 miles. I didn't want to overdo, because I know I'd pay for it in the morning.

It was fun. Still getting used to riding again. But, I broke a sweat and I feel it in my legs, which is after all the point of the exercise.

Bike riders all say Hi to one another.

"Bike riders all say Hi to one another."

That's the coolest thing about biking for me.

I'm glad things are going well for you and your new bike. My right knee isn't in the greatest shape and thankfully biking doesn't bother it too much. I've customized my bike a bit for my other health/pain issues plus I got a mountain bike, so I'd have the front shocks. It's so much more comfortable than my 20 year old road bike was.

I second the websites and recommend http://www.performancebike.com/ as well. My SO (an amateur racer) and I are always ordering stuff from Nashbar and Performance.

BTW, I just got all of your books recently and I plan to read the first one soon (finally).

I didn't notice any knee issues this morning. I did have to apply pressure to pedal up a few inclines, but it looks like it wasn't anything the old cartilage couldn't handle. If I ride more, a mountain bike might be in my future since there are trails here that I wouldn't want to risk the road bike on.

Oh--another website. *wg*

I hope you enjoy the books!
