My Wiscon program items arrived over the weekend. Looks like some interesting discussions upcoming. I don't recall ever having been on a panel with Ellen Kushner--I'm looking forward to the opportunity.

PROGRAM ASSIGNMENTS

Believable Evil (Politics, Religion, and Money)
Saturday, 2:30-3:45 p.m. in Wisconsin

Villains are often the weakest characterizations in fiction, perhaps in speculative fiction most of all. Why? Does this fact say something about the way we understand (or perhaps fail to understand) the nature of evil in the real world? How do we portray evil characters effectively?
Élisabeth Vonarburg, Kristine Smith, Steven H. Silver, M: Ellen Kushner, Chip Hitchcock, Bill Bodden

Living Room Session: Dealing With Burnout (Living Rooms)
Sunday, 2:30-3:45 p.m. in Capitol B

Creative, financial, physical, emotional, burnout can be the brick wall that keeps a writer from working. What can we do to head it off? What do we do when we get it? Should burnout be taken as a sign to quit? Is there a way to head off burnout?
Kristine Smith, M: Diane Silver, David J. Hoffman-Dachelet, James Frenkel

Back to Basics: World Building (Writing SF/F: The Craft)
Sunday, 10:00-11:15 p.m. in Assembly

Writing craft panels are always packed to the rafters. Let's talk about world. F&SF as a genre is defined by worlds that differ from our own present world How do you create a world with depth and reality? What makes a magic system or technology structure work?
Kristine Smith, Ellen Kushner, M: Elizabeth Barrette

The SignOut (Events)
Monday, 11:30am-12:45pm in Capitol Room

Come and sign your works, come and get things signed, come and hang out and wind down before you leave.

You're on apanel with Elizabeth Vonarburg! Wow! I was her American editor at Bantam lo these many years ago. Please convey my best wishes to her. She's a doll and a brilliant writer.

I will give her your regards.

I've known Elisabeth for several years. Met her at a Wiscon sometime back--over the last few years, she was good enough to review my books for a Canadian SF publication. She is very nice.

I want a variant of the burnout panel. "Things in life can cause you to hit the creative wall--family crises, money woes, health issues. Are there small things we can come up with that will keep the creative fire burning? How can we lure the fickle muse back when she knows she currently can't be the first priority?"

Hope it's a good con for you. When is this, anyway? I should be coming through Chicago June 8-June 12, and might have a 90 minute layover on Sunday. Will you be in town?
