A week

Okay, not quite yet, but it has felt like one. Maybe, two.

MacBook Air has been acquired. His name is “Airy,” because. Lightning fast. Pretty much out of the box, since the Apple Store folks took care of porting over the contents of the MacBook. A few Mail glitches, but other than that, all good.

15 hours battery life is doable if I stay away from internet (surfing okay, but videos not so much), music, and turn down the keyboard backlighting. It is as light, if not lighter than, my 1st gen iPad. I really didn’t want to spend the money now, but I had no choice and as far as the system is concerned, I think I made the right choice. Really liking the quiet and speed of the solid state drive.

Not to be outdone, Kuro-the-Forester decided on Friday that he wanted some attention, too. Noticed weird smells emanating from under the hood after visit to Apple Store–not gas/oil, but lighter chemical smells. No leaks, smoke, drips, red lights on dash. Still, I worried about things like, oh, brake fluid, and made an appointment at the garage. Verdict–torn axle boot. Smell was due to leaking grease hitting the exhaust and burning. Front boots replaced, for an amount not as bad as, say, a head gasket, but still. Kuro is happynowIhope. Now hoping that House doesn’t take it into its pointy little head to make it a three-fer.

Gaby had an infected toe a few weeks ago that required antibiotics and painkillers, so I think she’s good wrt Crisis of the Day for another month or two. I hope.

::fingers crossed::

Lost a small tree during the recent round of t-storms. It needed to come down anyway because it was an accidental tree, not an I-planted-you-here on-purpose, tree. Too close to the back fence and up in the power lines. I’m lucky wires didn’t come down when it fell…well, actually, it bent. Still needs to be cut. I shall add it to the list.

There was a robin in my garage, but I think it’s out now. It had been in there for a while, clattering about the eaves, leaving dropping everywhere. I was concerned that it had built a nest, but I think it was just frazzled by the enclosure and the storms. Hoping, anyway. I will keep an eye out in case it comes back.

Backyard has taken on a primeval aspect thanks to the heat and rain. Really need to cut the grass, but there’s too much standing water.

In other news, BLACKHAWKS!! I love the moment when the guys pass around the Cup, the speculation as to whom the captain will hand it off first. In 2010, Toews handed the Cup off to Marian Hossa, who had tried to win it with so many other teams and come up short. This year, he handed it to Michal Handzus, who played for, iirc, 14 years w/o playing on a championship team. Handzus them passed it to Jamal Mayers, who had played 15 17 years. Mayer then passed it to Michal Rozsival, the last of the old timers. Then Rozsival passed it to Dave Bolland, who scored the winning goal.

Hockey. I think preseason starts in a couple months….

The title of this post comes courtesy of one of the weirder spams I have ever received. WP spammers are usually remarkable only for their repetition and unique spin on the English language, but this post is noteworthy because it is completely whacked.

There is the potential of tights becoming developed that could remain ladder-free, created from a newly created material that can repair itself when the edges are brought back together. As it is possible to see, hosiery has come a extended way, and it really is undoubtedly going additional!

In other news, the head cold that I thought had run its course paid a return visit today. Chills. Body and headaches. Sneezing. I’m now at the point where I can breathe through my nose, but can’t taste anything. At least my throat stopped hurting.

In hockey news, looks as though the Hawks are in danger of winning one tonight. But they still have 18 minutes to screw things up, so I shall withhold my it’saboutdamnedtimes until the game is well and truly over. Like when all the guys are in the shower, or something.

Nothing new on tap. Coffee has been drunk and self fed. Pups have eaten and are now dozing. It’s a cloudy, breezy fall morning, with winds expected to pick up later in the day. Here’s hoping the power stays on. It went out for a couple of hours yesterday. I wasn’t home at the time, so the pups had to contend with the beeping UPS. They don’t like the beeping UPS. They were happy to see me come home.

Grocery shopping to be done. And later, cookie baking! Ginger-spice. The house is going to smell very Thanksgivingish.

Hawks lost last night to the Flames, dammit. I blame Canucks hangover. I think that rivalry burns a bit hotter than the one with the Wings, but that’s just my opinion.

Good to see the guys again.

If I told you that it was raining here, you would be utterly shocked, wouldn't you? Don't fib--you know it's true. I can see your face, so just admit it.

Hockey season ended for me last night. Hawks lost in sudden death 2-1 to Vancou. They tried, and Crawford was wonderful at goal. They showed a lot of heart, coming back as they did. But this year, it was not to be. I hope they keep Crawford and spend the off-season filling some holes. New season starts in a few months. Meanwhile, there's the Bulls to tide one over. I think baseball may be a wash this year.

Annnd because they're the #8 seed, the Hawks will play the Canucks in the first round. The Canucks, who won the President's Trophy for best regular season record. The Hawks did not play well against them this year.

And did I mention that there's no love lost? There's no love lost.

Oy.

Temps reached over 80F today, which is a bit much for early April. I ran the A/C, yes I did--the pups were spread out on any cool bare floor they could find, and I needed to use the oven, so. A/C.

It's a little cooler now. Waiting for the storms to slide in. Went outside to collect the plants, and managed to lock myself out of the house for the first time since I measured my age in single digits. Nothing like that sinking feeling when you realize that no, you don't have a set of keys in the car and no, you don't have the set that you keep in your jacket pocket because you aren't wearing a jacket.

Suffice to say that I got back inside without needing to climb through a window or break any glass. A little needless excitement to cap the weekend.

Dinner consisted of baked salmon with a drizzle of the good balsamic vinegar, mesclun with pink grapefruit, and my own homemade rosemary oven fries. I just sliced a russet, tossed the pieces with salt, pepper, and olive oil, and topped them with crush dried rosemary from last year's bush/tree/shrub/whatever. Lovely smell from the crushed needles--I know fresh herbs are better, but this rosemary still had a lot of flavor. And the fries were finished in about the same amount of time as the premade variety. Yes, they were tasiter. Crispy? No, but neither are the bagged variety unless you fry them. Lesson learned. No more bags.

Tomorrow's Monday. Wish it wasn't.

In other news--THE HAWKS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS! The Stars lost in regulation, so the Hawks are in. It was a crazy situation--if the Hawks had won today, they were in. But they lost, so all these tiebreakers came into play. Dallas had to win either in regulation or sudden death OT in order to take the #8 spot. If they lost or went to a shoot-out, they were out of the playoffs and the Hawks were in. They lost. Hawks in. Wish I felt happier about it. I mean, yes, I'm happy, and relieved that they don't join the group of 2-3 teams with the unfortunate distinction of missing the playoffs the year after winning the Cup. But they're uneven, streaky, and sometimes plain ol' lousy, and while I would love it if they turned out to be the Flyers of 2011...let's just say I'm willing to be surprised, but I'm not expecting to be.

Second episode of The Killing tonight. It's a grim thing, but I am still looking forward to it. Love Mireille Enos.

Because if you're going to blow your winning streak, you should do it against a team that's already out of the playoffs.

Update #1: And now it's 2-3, 3 minutes to go in the 2nd period.

Update #2: Final score 2-3. Tampa Florida won.

Dammit.

Not too long ago--2 weeks?--the Blackhawks were 11th in the Western Conference and out of the playoff race.

Tonight, they beat Carolina 5-2 for their 7th straight win. Last 11 games, they're 8-1-2. Oh, and they're now in 4th place in the West.

Anything can happen, and a slot in the playoffs is far from assured. But it's nice to see the Hawks playing like the Hawks again.

PS: Toews. MVP. Just sayin'

1) It's Monday. First day of vacation...working vacation...but still. Monday.

2) Had to get up just as early as I would have if I had gone to work since I needed to take Kuro in for an oil change/tire rotation. The good news was that on the way in, I found a slip in the glovebox that entitled me to a free oil change. The savings were not insignificant. Hope this presages the rest of the year.

3) The bad news was that since I got to bed late and needed to get up early, I ignored Gaby when she indicated quite emphatically that she wanted to go outside. Given that she had been outside a half-hour before, I figured she had heard an animal and wanted to go after it. I heard her leave the bedroom, then return a minute or so later. After I awoke, I went into the living room to find that she had left quite an accident in her usual spot, the first one in months. My bad. My fault. If I had gotten my ass out of bed and let her out, it wouldn't have happened.

4) At least for now, I like working with the radio on. Classical station, mostly music. But every so often, voices, which I don't mind. They're voices I don't have to respond to, which make them almost like coffee shop voices or office voices. So, I'm not engaged, but I'm also not alone. That seems to be the way this wip wants to roll.

5) It's no fun watching the Blackhawks this year. It was different before they won the Cup--they were a young team, and the ups and downs were to be expected. There were expectations, but there was also a certain lack of pressure. Now the pressure is there, but half the team is gone and the replacements either haven't settled in yet, or are the wrong replacements. The injuries don't help. Yes, I know all teams suffer through them. They still don't help.
