Nice yesterday. Gorgeous today--mid 70s and sunny with puffy clouds. Overnight, temps dropped to the low 60s and the humidity levels fell. I opened my bedroom windows to let in the cool, and slept like a rock--when I woke up, the thermometer on the alarm clock read 65F.

Supposedly we're going to have a cooler pattern over the next two weeks. Looking forward to it...except I hope it doesn't slow down the tomatoes too much. Some of the biggies should start ripening Any Time Now.

Another bad thing about the Cool--the skeeters are out in force. I have a citronella candle burning and the Off! personal fan thingie going and they don't help much. It gets worse after the sun goes down.

Watched movies and wrote. Cooked and baked, ginger cookies and banana bread and marinated tuna steak. Was the steak that came out way too salty--could have been too much soy sauce in the marinade. I will try to cut it by cutting up the steaks and adding saltless dressing of some type and making tuna salad. Hell of a way to treat tuna steak, but they're a bit inedible as they are.

Working with webmistress Ruta on the website revamp. Going to Wordpress. Blog will be embedded in website. Some things will stay the same, but new content and upgrades to present content need to be made. Having fun with themes so far. They really are fairly flexible.

Not sure when the launch will be. So many other things going on.

And it's Monday. Less said about that, the better.

When I read complaints in the comments section of a recipe that it's too salty, I should pay attention.

Freedom!

It's software. Specifically, it's a tool that blocks internet access for a period of time that you specify. I think the upper limit is 4 hours. In order to get back online within your designated blocking period, you need to reboot your system.

I tried it for the first time last night. Set it for 120 minutes. It was nice. Yes, I could have rebooted, or gone to the office where the iBook sat, still surfworthy. But I had a number of files open and had started working, and shutting them all down and starting over was just too much trouble, as was getting up and going to another room.

The experiment wasn't completely successful, as I dozed off about a half hour into my work session. One of the dangers of working on the couch when one has had a long day.

Anyway, Freedom is out there, and if it only takes a nudge to keep you offline, it may be the tool for you.

Thus endeth the PSA.

Dinner

Early Sunday dinner. Meatloaf. I followed Ina's recipe pretty much, except that along with the 1 2/3 lbs of Flying-S ground beef I added 12 oz hot Italian sausage.

It's a keeper. Unbelievably moist, even though I bakes it on the sheet pan atop a piece of parchment paper. And I can't imagine how hot that sausage really is because I still tasted a bit of a kick.

Served it with some of the 7-grain pilaf and green salad. Winner winner. Stuffed now, and trying not to pick at the leftovers.

I'm on the deck now, having just breakfasted. First load of laundry is in the washer, with another in queue. Dinner is soon to be prepped for later baking--meatloaf, which isn't exactly a hot weather dinner but oh well. Made a 7-grain pilaf/roasted veggie salad y'day for a side dish. Meals for the week.

Made roasted veggie hummus y'day as well. Red pepper. Zucchini. Carrots. Sauted the garlic to take the bitter edge off. Oh my, this is a keeper.

I wanted to go see HP7.2 today, but no go. Too much to do. Early start required at the day job tomorrow, so can't stay up late, either. Once again, Sunday will go too quickly.

The latest LJ DDoS issue has convinced me that it's time to give WordPress a try. The great tech support that is SFFNET has already installed it on my site, and soon Miz Ruta and I will be adjusting some theme or other to suit. I spent part of last night going through said themes--the one I loved was only offered on WP itself, drat it--and settled on 4. I think I know which is the winner but won't know for sure until we try colors on it.

This will mean a redesign of the website, which will be slight or stripped down to the joists depending. I will likely keep the Mists by The Gates photo because I love it, but colors and the books pages etc may change. It was time, I guess. Clean-Out 2011 continues.

A few folks on my f-list look to be migrating over here. I may do the same. I should just take the leap and go to Wordpress, though. Must discuss with webmistress.

In other news, out on the deck. Not a cloud to be seen. It will be warm--80s--but could get a little lake cooling. I am determined to spend as much time outside as possible.

I do need to get groceries, however. Will be departing anon. Massage later this afternoon, and a badly needed one. I must have strained a shoulder muscle when I dragged King off my bed during Friday morning's t-storms, because by the time I got to work I could barely turn my head. It's better today, but still a little achy. King has, of course, recovered from the trauma and is now lying under a shrub--atop lava rock ouch--overseeing his backyard.

Oh well. Onward.
gimme a break
A short stretch of rain w/ thunder and a strobe light show of lightning passed through last night, but it seems to have taken some of the humidity with it. It's lovely now, 80s with lower %RH. As soon as I got home from work, I fed the pups, then made dinner for myself and hit the deck. Pasta pesto with some of the garden greens. Glass of wine. Head hurts--brain drain headache. Wine helps. Just sitting helps.

Good news on friends' blogs. That helps, too.

Hope everyone is having a nice evening.

Sitting outside despite the humidity and the lightest of sprinkles coming down. The rain kept the temp from ratcheting up, and I'm enjoying the coolness.

I can haz new treadmill. The installers were supposed to arrive between 4 and 8 in the pip emma, but they called me at work around 3 to tell me that they had arrived. So I jetted home and let the dogs out in the backyard while the guys came in the front. Took them about a half-hour to put the thing together. It's about the equivalent of the one that broke down--0-10mph, 0-10% incline. This one doesn't have a dashboard fan, but I don't expect I will miss it. It does have a jack for the iPod so I can listen without earbuds, which is nice. The sound isn't the best, but it's good enough.

I think the belt on the old machine must have been slipping for a while, and that maybe the calibration was off. I didn't hit the same speeds this evening, but I felt it more. Of course, the two-week break didn't help.

Between the new treadmill and all the junk haulage, a lot has been accomplished in the last week or so even though it doesn't really feel like it.

Garden-wise, the mini-roses are sporting a second round of buds. The full-size tomatoes are sporting handball-size greenies, and the Tommy Toe cherry is showing a lots of little'uns. The lilies have opened, lovely fuchsia and white blooms, and the hydrangeas are going strong. The Japanese beetles were munching on my hanging basket petunias while waiting for the hibiscus and Rose of Sharon buds to become interesting. I showed them--went all chemical on them and broke out the rose spray.

Waiting for the bats to come out. I love my little bats.

Supposed to heat up again this weekend. No major rain predicted, although that doesn't mean we won't get any. I intend to take a break from the house. I will cook--Ina Garten made wheatberry salad with veggies, and I want to try it. I may also make more hummus because it turned out really well. And cookies. I may make cookies. And write. And maybe vacuum before the dog hair takes over the house.

After two weeks of hell w/ t-storms, today was much less humid with temp around 80F. I'm sitting outside in shorts and a t-shirt, and I feel *chilly.* I may have to put on a jacket if I want to stay out past sunset.

Since all knowledge is contained within LJ....

I have an ancient Craftsman garage door opener. Model 139.655000. 1/3 hp. Chain drive. It still works, but the remotes went south back when Dad was still alive. I've needed to operate it from the touchpad inside the garage for years, and while yeah, it still works, it would be nice to have an opener that I can open and close with a remote, especially in bad weather.

This opener was discontinued years ago. I can't find even a hint that parts are available anywhere, and universal remotes may not even work with it. I could try one of those converter kits, but I've read a number of complaints about lack of range--more than 30-40 feet away, and the garage door won't open. Hell, my driveway is 85 feet long.

So, if I replace the opener with a new 1/2 hp chain drive model...

...can I use the same chain, or is that not desirable/possible?

Can I install it myself using the same brackets/supports? IOW, pop off the old box and pop on the new box?

Even if I need to drill/install brackets/whatnot, can I do it myself? Or does the job require male hand strength?
